I have been working as a human rights activist for the right to health care in the U.S. for more than a decade. We need a system which takes profits out, undoes the commodification of health care and treats health as a human right. Only a national single-payer financed system with no cost barriers can do this.

As part of my work with the International Committee of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG), www.nlg.org, I wrote a “shadow report” on The Right to Health: How financing affects the right to health care in the U.S. This shadow report was submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Council, www.ohchr.org/en/hrbodies/hrc/pages/aboutcouncil.aspx ,  by the NLG, the International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL), the People’s Action Institute and the Democracy and Rights Institute for the May 2020 Universal Periodic Review of the human rights obligations of the U.S. Shadow reports from civil society provide alternative information to the official governmental reports.
